Freedom in journalism : Is it a reality or a dream?

"Four hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets.."

- Napoleon Bonaparte

Where do you find real news? The news which is not adulterated and which is true to its facts? It is a question we need to ask because these days are the days of paid news or fake news.

For me, it sometimes is a dream but a far fetched dream which can be a reality after a few years of struggle.

Journalism is a very powerful tool to raise our voice. You can embrace the world which is moving towards becoming a smaller world a more united world or You can push the world backwards, you can actually, with your power of journalism, take the world back to where it was a very insular, a very isolated world of a group of people by portraying some human beings as the others. A pen is a very powerful weapon we have which some of us don't understand.

Now coming back to why we don't find real news anywhere is because everyone is scared. There is threat to life when someone brings truth into limelight. So far the current statistics reveals, in 2019, 25 journalists were killed in 13 countries. No one wants to risk their lives and hence filters out the news which has to be published. If I have to expose a major scam, I would be really scared as I would fear for my life. This is the reality. The freedom of speech is not a right that can be practiced freely. Thus many parents fear their children taking up the profession of journalists.

I recently attended a national media conference and got a lot of insight into the lives of journalists. And yes, it's not easy. But then one major thing I learned was that humour is great tool to express the truth. Eg. The daily show host reported about Trump's visit to India in a humorous way which has grabbed the attention of millions. If you've not watched it, do watch.

Well I think it might take time but the future is bright. With internet journalism, everyone is a journalist. They can report and criticise a issue sitting in any part of the world. Hope there is a bright future for journalists to report about a issue free
